EMC Information Storage and Management Associate – EMCISA

by Mirek Burnejko

EMCStorage certifications and storage networking certifications have amazing value. Let’s look how fast the storage industry grows.

To migrate to virtual environments, IT departments must have an access to all kinds of storage arrays (FC, iSCSI, NAS) and storage networking switches (FC, FCoE and Ethernet).

The value and demand for good engineers and experts is growing. The best company, from the storage industry, is still EMC. Of course companies like HP, IBM (NetApp), Hitachi or even Oracle (SUN) are close behind.

EMC has many certifications for engineers from all levels of expertise. EMC Information Storage and Management Associate (EMCISA) is one of the four certifications from the associate level (from the EMC Proven Professional Certification program) and focuses on storage technologies and concepts. It is also, a first step to more advanced topics and certifications, like EMC Data Center Architect Storage Networking Speciality (EMCDCAS) or EMC Storage Administrator – CLARiiON Solutions Expert (EMCSAE).

What Exams You Must Pass to Become EMCISA

To become EMC Information Storage and Management Associate (EMCISA) and become EMC Proven Professional you must pass only one exam: E20-001 Information Storage and Management Exam. The exam concentrates on:

  • Basics of the storage systems
  • Storage networking technologies from DAS to FCoE with some aspects of virtualization
  • Business continuity topics like backups and replications
  • Security and management of the storage systems

Where You Can Pass the EMCISA Exam

You can pass the EMCISA exam in a VUE certification center.

How Much Does the EMCISA Exam Cost

Exam costs $200 plus taxes.

Format of the Exam

The exam is a normal 90-minutes long computer-based test. The test is a combination of multi-choice questions and more complex, with few interactive simulations. You do not need any trainings as prerequisites.

How To Renew Your EMCISA Certification

You don’t need to update the EMCISA certification, but it is highly recommended, every 3 years.

How To Prepare to the EMCISA Exam

  • Books
  • Trainings
  • Starter Kits
    • Starter Kit
EMC provides starter kit for all who want to prepare by itself to the EMCISA exam. The started kit consists of one DVD with a training, additional materials and an exam voucher ($200). The cost of the starter kit is equal to $500.

Examples of Job Opportunities

Success Story

The Starter Kit is definitely the way to go for the EMCISA certification. You get everything you need, and you save a bundle. The book is quite good, it’s high level, vendor agnostic, and gives a lot of great foundational information that you can use for studying for any vendor storage test.

I would also make sure you join the EMC Community, especially the Proven Professional sections and get access to EMC’s Powerlink site (If you work for a partner) where there are tons of white papers and other valuable information as well.

You can register in any time and pass this exam. Everyone can pass this exam without any requirements (training, companies, etc).

Hello, Hope whoever is going to answer my question will be doing well.

First of all i would like to tell that i have cleared EMCISA (E20-001 exam (ISM)) certification and i am passionate to proceed my career in storage Domain. However as I started my career as Level 1 Storage Support Engineer for Clariion, due to my contractual employment, my contract expired exactly with one year of relevant storage administration experience. But i had gained enough basic knowledge (in Data storage Administration) in order to dedicate my immediate future to work in storage Domain. But once i came out to look for a job i would like to know why the Multinational companys is not entertaining candidates who has one year experience in storage?, and moreover even these candidates understand the sensitivity of the storage jobs as to what they have to exactly implement in their responsiblities. With strong basic knowledge of storage a one year experience candidate would be ready to adapt quickly and work effectively. since i didn’t get any storage jobs currently as the organisations look for minimum 2 years of experience, i had to join to a job which is completely different domain from the storage. After all these explanations with overall experience of one year relevant storage and one+year other domain experience can i get a job in storage?

IMO sure. I know many guys who had 1-2 years of experience and they got jobs for senior-level posiotions. Maybe this is not the answer you want to hear, but that’s true. If you have storage skills, learn more, use indeed to find new job offers for your skills and apply, meet people, speak with them. Eeach day with technology with you don’t love is wasted. That’s my opinion :)

Hi Mirek,
I am interested in storage certifications.
What is the minimum requirement for storage studies?
How many certifications in EMC Storage?
How much cost for certifications?
